How you can take care of your Mental Health

In the year 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health observed the day for the first time. The objective was to raise awareness about rising mental health concerns and mobilize support for the cause. The day is aimed to make sure the topic is brought to the fore and continue to be on people's mind.

‘Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority.’ is the theme for World Mental Health Day 2023.

The pandemic has been instrumental in bringing due attention to the concern. Here we have curated a list of tips that can help you prevent situations that can affect your mind's health.

#1. Maintain Physical Health

Physical health and mental health are interlinked. Physical well-being directly contributes to one's mental health. The brain needs food in the form of glucose to function properly. Practicing regular exercises and cardio training not only helps the body but also keeps the brain fit. Another important factor is a healthy diet. Foods rich in Omega3 like walnuts, oils etc help provide essential nutrients to the brain. A minimum of 8 Litres of water in the day helps to flush out toxins from the body.

#2. Meditation and Yoga Training

As already iterated above, exercises that use the physical body are not only advantageous to the body but also to the brain. Practicing regular meditation helps to get rid of fleeting thoughts and frees the mind's thinking tank, which allows for better decision-making.

#3. Healthy Social Interaction

Remember the time, when we were trapped in our homes for most of the days and missed the physical meetings and interactions. The pandemic also brought our attention to the increasing mental health concerns among the youth. Humans need socializing to keep us in contact with our sanity. Expressing thoughts and emotions helps to release any pent-up negative energy and creates space for newer experiences. Alternatively petting your dogs (or maybe cats in other cases) also helps to feel connected and releases feel-good hormones.

#4. Spend time on Hobbies

Activities like gardening, dancing, and music are some of the hobbies/interests that help us to utilize our free time and learn new skills. Whether you like to cook or code after school, any activity that fits your routine will clear the mind of any accumulated stress and release hormones that increase the brain's functioning.

#5. Decrease Screen Time

Spending hours on end stuffed in your cozy bed may feel very relaxing, but it can cause stiffness in the neck and back region and deteriorates the circadian rhythm which in turn keeps you awake at night. If you suffer from this, use applications like AppBlock, ScreenTime Recorder, DailyLimit, etc to check your screen time.
